Popular gaming program making UC Santa Cruz one of the elite

Four years ago, the Baskin School of Engineering's computer science department began offering degrees in game design. Now the program boasts more than 400 undergraduate students and 18 doctoral and master's students... Other schools with programs in game design include Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Southern California and Georgia Tech. But the program at UCSC sets itself apart from the others as being one of the only ones to cross the disciplinary divide between technology and design....

Scientists at IIIT-A working on ISS to probe into terrorists' disguise

The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) is developing an intelligent surveillance system (ISS) which has the potential of figuring out miscreants and terrorists by penetrating into their disguise and makeovers.... In the first phase of the project, scientists are devising a smart and intelligent counter-terrorism mechanism wherein smart surveillance camera system is being developed by scientists of IIIT-A and experts of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

 Virtual Musicians, Real Performances: How Artificial Intelligence Will Change Music

North Carolina’s Zenph Sound Innovations (Zenph Studio ) models the musical performances of musicians from Thelonius Monk to Rachmaninoff, based on how they played in occasionally old, scratchy recordings. Using that model, the company creates new recordings as they would be played by deceased musicians, if they were around to record with today’s equipment, to critical acclaim. And that’s just for starters.

UCSD Researcher Calls on SmartAction(TM) Virtual Agents to Capture and Report Student Illness Symptoms for CDC Pilot Program

SmartAction Virtual Agents are based on an artificial intelligence engine that enables them to conduct natural language voice conversations. Once Virtual Agents have been trained for a new task, they can provide services that previously required a human to perform. For the UCSD application, "virtual nurses" quickly and efficiently gather illness symptoms via a telephone interview.

Sci-Frightening: Getting too big for our boots

This may all seem rather far fetched, but as a child who grew up in the 80s, I am watching the science fiction of that generation come true today. Touch screens are as common place as pencils and video conferencing is actually far cooler than we had thought it would have been. Internet speeds are ridiculously fast (especially in South Korea) and the development of dedicated robot assistants is far more advanced than we recognise here in Barbados.
