Popular
gaming program making UC Santa Cruz one of the elite
Four years ago, the Baskin School of Engineering's computer science
department began offering degrees in game design. Now the program boasts
more than 400 undergraduate students and 18 doctoral and master's
students... Other schools with programs in game design include Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, University of Southern California and Georgia Tech.
But the program at UCSC sets itself apart from the others as being one of
the only ones to cross the disciplinary divide between technology and
design....

Virtual Musicians, Real Performances: How
Artificial Intelligence Will Change Music
North Carolina’s Zenph Sound Innovations (Zenph Studio ) models the musical
performances of musicians from Thelonius Monk to Rachmaninoff, based on how
they played in occasionally old, scratchy recordings. Using that model, the
company creates new recordings as they would be played by deceased
musicians, if they were around to record with today’s equipment, to

UCSD Researcher Calls on SmartAction(TM) Virtual
Agents to Capture and Report Student Illness Symptoms for CDC
Pilot Program

that enables them to conduct natural language voice conversations. Once
Virtual Agents have been trained for a new task, they can provide services
that previously required a human to perform. For the UCSD application,
"virtual nurses" quickly and efficiently gather illness symptoms via a
telephone interview.

Sci-Frightening:
Getting too big for our boots
|

This may all seem rather far fetched,
but as a child who grew up in the 80s, I am watching the science fiction of
that generation come true today. Touch screens are as common place as
pencils and video conferencing is actually far cooler than we had thought it
would have been. Internet speeds are ridiculously fast (especially in South
Korea) and the development of dedicated robot assistants is far more
advanced than we recognise here in Barbados.

New Book

Artificial Intelligence is already here,
according to Artificial Intelligence Around Us (ISBN
978-1-58909-666-4), an intriguing and insightful new book just released by
Bookstand Publishing.
"Artificial intelligence is already upon us,"
says author and researcher Dr. Yuri Iserlis. "It not just something coming
in the distant future. Every day, we enjoy the fruits of the work being
done in this field, yet we are hardly aware of it. In fact, AI systems are
everywhere around us, and many of these we encounter on a routine basis in
our daily lives. This book is intended to give the reader a better
understanding what is currently going on around us, and why."
