Non-human DJ gets radio gig Denise is an advanced Virtual Assistant software. She comes with our real-time proprietary graphic engine, a high quality English Text to speech voice and a Voice Recognition (Command Mode) engine. Denise's works with an adaptive Artificial Intelligence Brain, that can learn by itself and be customized by user.
Virtual Assistant will take to the airwaves in San Antonio, Texas, in what may mark another step on the path that puts flesh-and-blood radio personalities out of a job. Denise, will take to the air on Aug. 24 from 1 to 4 pm CST on KROV in San Antonio, Texas. Read more...

Aquatic Microrobot Capable of Walking on Water Surface Like a Water Strider.
The robot is about the size of a quarter, with ten water-repellent, wire
legs and two movable, oar-like legs propelled by two miniature motors. Because
the weight of the microrobot is equal to that of about 390 water striders, one
might expect that it would sink quickly when placed on the water surface. But it
stands effortlessly on water surfaces and also walks and turns freely.

Augmented reality windows being developed for Toyota. As a child sitting in the back of the family car, did you ever use your finger to doodle in the condensation on the inside of the windows? Well, a group of engineers and designers from Toyota Motor Europe's Kansei1 Design Division and the consultancy arm of the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) have taken car-window-doodling into the 21st Century. They've created a prototype system that could turn the side windows of Toyotas into touchscreen augmented reality devices, allowing passengers to interface with the passing scenery. Read more...

The NSA Is Building An Artificial Intelligence System That Can Read Minds. It sounds like something right out of science fiction -- a system that can literally read thoughts like a magician. It's called "Aquaint" (Advanced QUestion Answering for INTelligence) Read more...
Cleverbot, an Artificial Intelligence computer program developed by Icogno Founder Rollo Carpenter in 1988 and released to the masses in 1997, “learns” from Internet users. Everything that is put into the program is catalogued and eventually repeated as a response. You can imagine what kind of delightful conversations will result when the general population of the World Wide Web is given cart blanche to say anything and everything to a program that has no feelings or physical capabilities. An article from early 2010 seemed optimistic about Cleverbot’s abilities, claiming that “it may soon have a database of dialogue so complex that it can talk about any subject with anyone. Bakebot. The robot just happens to wear an apron resembling protective gown and mixes up cookie dough by holding the mining bowl in the left hand and using a rubber spatula in the right. The head of the robot has a laser scanner and a sensor camera that allow it to see what ingredients it needs and how much mixing and stirring it needs to do. Read more...
Divers
can talk to dolphins, perhaps aliens, with new device. An unlikely
partnership between a dolphinologist and an artificial intelligence specialist
has led to the development of a piece of hi-tech gadgetry that may allow humans
and dolphins to talk to one another for the first time, according to the
Independent. The iPhone-sized device uses a complex algorithm that is capable of
making both dolphin-to-human and human-to-dolphin translations. It may soon
allow divers to communicate with dolphins in real time, and is currently being
tested aboard a boat in the Bahamas.

Touch-Screen
Steering Wheel Keeps Eyes on Road.
A team of researchers from the
University of Stuttgart, University of Duisburg-Essen and the German Research
Center for Artificial Intelligence have created a prototype automotive steering
wheel that uses a touch screen to enable the driver to control things such as
the radio or navigate a map without having to take their eyes off the road.

With
the ai-one™ Topic-Mapper SDK, developers can build intelligent
text applications that deliver sense-making and learning capabilities for
semantic discovery, knowledge collaboration, sentiment analysis, and
classification. AI and learning are inherent to the technology and the API
gives developers commands they need to “build a learning machine” with the
attributes critical to their application

Mr. Hsinchun Chen, director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and McClelland professor of management information systems at the University of Arizona said, over the past decade, the face of national security has changed, and now depends more and more on information. The most attractive feature of artificial intelligence for governments is that it exceeds the limits of humans. AI applications can monitor communications around the clock to hunt suspects or detect terrorist plots. Read More...
Autonomous
robots could collaborate on mapping hazardous environments.
That's the idea behind the
U.S. Army's Micro
Autonomous Systems and Technology (MAST)
Collaborative Technology Alliance Program, which would see swarms of small
rolling, hopping, crawling or flying robots working together on reconnaissance
missions in civilian or military applications.

intelligence researchers at Georgia Tech are embarking on an extraordinarily
ambitious project. They’ve developed a machine equipped with a computer program
that, in theory, will enable researchers to communicate with dolphins and
possibly learn the rudiments of dolphin language. Read

Is Artificial Intelligence a Failure? At M.I.T.'s Brains, Minds, and Machines symposium this week, experts in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, cognitive science and linguistics gave a gray review to A.I. research over the last three decades. Marvin Minsky, who pioneered neural networks and made major advances in early A.I., criticized the focus of current research: "[Today] you'll find students excited over robots that play basketball or soccer or dance or make funny faces at you. [But] they're not making them smarter." Read more...

Robots find high levels of radiation, throwing doubt on ‘road map’ to control Fukushima crisis.April 19, 2011 Remoted-controlled robot in number 1 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (credit: Tokyo Electric Power Co.). Two remote-controlled robots from iRobot found high radiation levels in reactor buildings 1 and 3 . The finding could make it impossible for workers to enter the Fukushima plant to carry out crucial fixes under a a six-month “road map” for bringing radioactivity under control, The robots detected radiation leaking at a rate of 49 millisieverts per hour in the No. 1 reactor and 57 millisieverts per hour in the No. 3 reactor. FRIDA. This headless, two-armed robot may be tomorrow’s factory worker. Its
name is FRIDA (Friendly Robot for Industrial Dual-arm Assembly), and it’s a
creation of ABB, the Swiss power and automation giant, which introduced it early
this month at the Hannover trade show, Europe’s largest industrial fair.
Designed for assembly applications, FRIDA is capable of using its human-like arms to grasp and manipulate electronic components and other small parts. The machine is a concept robot that ABB created to show off its vision for a new kind of industrial robot. Read more...

Head-worn
device uses sonar to rapidly diagnose stroke
A team of radiologists and retired US Navy sonar experts have used technology developed for submarines as the basis for a new device which offers quick detection, diagnosis and monitoring of stroke. Combined with a portable laptop based console, the head-worn device enables different types of stroke and brain injury to be discovered and located, differentiating normal blood flow from life threatening conditions and delivering an initial diagnosis in under a couple of minutes. iPet Companion lets people play
with real kitties over the internet
It seems to be one of those “well-known facts” that petting an animal can lower a person’s blood pressure – and yes, we’re assuming that the animal isn’t a piranha. Unfortunately, many people are unable to own a pet, or they at least have to spend their stressful workday away from their cuddly critter. A new system called iPet Companion, however, lets users play with real, live cats – in real time – via the internet. Read More
Video Name Tags turn
salespeople into walking TV commercials
While many of us may think that retail salespeople are already doing quite enough to sell us their wares, the folks over at the Recom Group obviously believe that face-to-face sales still has some untapped potential. That's why they've developed the Video Name Tag, a 2.8-inch OLED screen that displays still and/or video advertising, that salespeople wear like a traditional name tag. Now, why they're trying to sell you one product, you can get the goods on another by staring at their chest. Read More
