Best computer: What does it mean, the best computer? It is not the same
as the best car. We can use the best car for 3 to 5 years or even longer. The
best computer can become obsolete in one to two years. A car is a complete system.
A computer, as a rule, is a part of computer system or network, and its
performances can be associated with the demands of these systems or networks
(local or global). The second big difference between a computer and a car,
is its ability to be upgraded. By changing its parts or software you can periodically upgrade a
computer to maintain the best performance
for a long time. On the other hand, the best computer is a customized
computer (custom built). Customization can be done during the purchasing and/or upgrading
processes. And finally we need to think about the reliability and support for the computer system.
Search Criteria:
The best computer must be chosen with the help of 3 main criteria:
Performances: This is the total effectiveness of a computer system. For example, computer clock speed and memory is a measure of computer "power" ( amount of work that a computer can do in a given time period), capacity to save information, and so on.
Integral Reliability: This is the computer's capacity to demonstrate the same performance over its life time. Integral reliability consists of two parts: reliability of product (either hardware, or software, or both) and reliability of support (accessibility, friendliness, accuracy of service, plus quality of computer’s performance after repair). For products being manufactured by big name companies, supposing that integral reliability equals 100%, you may assume that 90-99% of it is product reliability and 1-10% is support reliability. This means that, for a big name manufacturer, 90-99 cases out of 100, you won't need any services during the warrantee period. For no name companies, product reliability could equal 70-80% of the total, while support reliability could equal 20-30%. Imagine the following scenario: you bought a no-name computer with 1-year warrantee. In nine months or so, when something goes wrong, you try to find the manufacturer and can't, because it either disappeared, or went bankrupt. In this case, your product’s reliability (70-80%) cannot be compensated by the reliability of support (20-30%) to achieve total 100% reliability.
Cost: This includes the price, tax and shipping, and cost of installation and usage. For example, you can buy a computer for $500 without any software, a modem, CD burner, and so on, but after that you spend an additional $1000 on the above-mentioned equipment and software. Or, you can buy a fully equipped computer for $900 at the factory. Just remember about hidden costs! Keep in mind, too, that a new system may bring many costs you may not have considered. These could include maintenance cost, costs related to the purchase of additional equipment or software, security costs, staff training, and more. A rule of thumb is that you can expect to spend for example two or three times the cost of the software on the entire installation itself.
Brand name,
IBM-compatible or Apple:
You can save yourself a lot of time by choosing the right brand early.
The computer industry is extremely competitive. Approximately every two
years, main computer performances like speed and memory capacity double. That means that
the computer manufacturers are in the race and under pressure all the time.
Most computer models released to the market appear
to have some flaws. Because of short developing period, it is impossible to test and fix all problems of a given new design. The extent of these flaws depends on the manufacturer's culture
and tradition. Big name companies have a minimum number of defects before shipping, or they can
find and fix them faster. Therefore, if you buy a computer or its parts with a reputable brand name (Dell,
Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, IBM, Apple, etc,) you may protect yourself from future troubles.
In the beginning, you'll have to decide upon a computer (or any computer product) brand. You must choose whether to purchase an IBM-compatible (PC) or a Macintosh computers (Macs). PCs manufactured by IBM, Dell, Gateway, Acer, Hewlett Packard, Compaq, Sony are IBM-compatible. Macintosh computers are manufactured by Apple Computer , Inc. PCs are very popular and currently dominate the computer market (90%), particularly in large firms and financially-oriented departments. Although PCs run the widest range of software applications, now the Macs run the same, most important in our practice applications: Microsoft Office, Quicken, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Director, FileMakerPro and so on.. Macintosh models are very strong in the educational, graphics, and multimedia segments of the Market. Macs are very easy to use and require less technical knowledge for tasks such as networking or connecting peripherals. PCs and Macs can work in one network. One argument is very important for Internet users: in the cyber world, there are over 100 times less Mac viruses, than PC viruses.
Types
of Computer assembling
On the Computer Market you can find the following types of computers assembling:
complete assembled computers like notebooks or PDA,
complete equipped computer like desktops, equipped with monitor, keyboard, mouse, sometimes speakers.
For manufacturers or vendors both types of computer's assembling are available to ship ("Ready-to-Ship") within 24 hours. Very often brand name manufacturers and several assembly companies suggest to user to buy a customized computer, that is assembled to enforce given performance needs. This means that customers can order computers with given performance built, and the manufacturer will do it, but in this case computer is available to ship more than in 24 hours. These computers are called "Custom Built Computers" or "Customized computers".
If you have a computer and access to the Internet, you own a huge mall in your mouse- all the Internet Market, where you can find and buy everything. You don't need a car, a dress or shoes, you can buy it at every time, 24 hours per day , 7 days per week. You need only to know the Internet store's addresses (URLs), and have patience.
But if your goal is to buy the BEST computer on the market without any guideline, you will have to choose from about 5 million options. May be more. Approximately, the same situation exists for choosing software and equipment. Whether you are a novice or an expert, it is not easy to find just the right one for YOU in such a sea of opportunities, for two reasons: it is impossible to sort through all available hardware and software, simply because at the time of your search the market is often being updated with new items, and, if you are as most people, it is difficult to define and express your needs.
Our Guide can help you.
To choose what you need for realizing your targets and have the best deal, first of all, you must make on the basis of the above mentioned criteria some choices. You need to:
- select the right one for you a type of computer by comparing the features. Just define, what is the better for you: desktops or notebooks, desktops or workstations, workstations or servers, and so on;
- choose the best computer model for given type of computer, matching your needs (select model and series);
- choose the best software for this computer model and best peripherals.
Or you can order custom built computer with special peripheral devices. If you are buying a second, third, etc. computer, you have to keep in mind how to organize a network, and what kind of network equipment you need.
Our Guide can help you. After that, to find the cheaper computer (or computer product) you need to make search a best seller with help of the Comparison shopping search engines. You can use also the following very useful tool, that integrates data of the MySimon, DealTime, CNET, Price Watch, PriceScan, and many other popular comparison-shopping sites simultaneously for the best prices: BEST BUY FINDER
When you find a seller, you need to evaluate the rank of this seller. All Internet stores of the giant computer manufacturers have the highest rank. If you are a computer expert or have serious computer experience, you can use other sources, including those in the computer discount market. In these cases, you should know the ranking of these sources before you trust them. Some web sites suggest 5-star rank evaluation, but check how the ranking was evaluated. If it is the result of 1 to 10 users voting, don't trust this result, you must see a minimum of 30 users. The more users who vote, the closer to reality the survey is.

But don't hurry to buy! You have to know about possible mistakes.
Don't be afraid to make a small mistake , because if you don't make mistakes, you're not working on serious problems. But be aware about big mistakes, and try to listen the experts. As Niels Bohr said , "An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field"
First of all check out the merchant. Check out the following sites to see if a merchant is serving his or her customers properly:
Avoid shopping on the first of the month and right before holidays. Usually these are traditionally heavy-traffic times, and stores regularly jack up prices as much as 10 percent.
Believe nothing the salesperson says until he or she proves it.
Concentrate on sales rather than coupons. Contrary to popular belief, sales usually offer the better deals.
Check attentively all merchandise and price information , including the model (whether it is a US or non-US model), the origin of the product (whether it is new, refurbished or remanufactured), what accessories are included and what the warranty covers.
Check for a total of all charges including shipping, handling, insurance and taxes.
Pay by credit card with low credit limit. Avoid checks or money orders. With credit card you should notify your credit card company if you encounter any problems.
If retailer offers rebates or other special offers , make sure the terms are clear and follow instructions precisely.
In all cases find out about the seller's return and refund policy. Be sure to learn about the allowable return period, about any restocking fees that the seller charges, and about your liability for the shipping charges for returned merchandise.
Always keep copies of all transactions including receipts, credit card charges, correspondence, etc. For phone orders, make a note of the merchandise ordered, the price, promised delivery date, the name of the any persons with whom you deal.
If the merchandise is not shipped within 30 days, you generally have the right to cancel your order and receive a complete refund.
If you are unable to obtain satisfaction after notifying the seller of your problem, you can contact the consumer protection agency in the seller's state.
Get a rain check from Customer Service for out-of-stock sale items.
Where you can, " try before you buy", that will ensure you won’t buy something you don’t like. Be aware: at this time many software companies short their own Quality assurance groups and testers. This could deteriorate the quality of their products.
Whatever you do, don’t shop when hungry. Studies show you’ll spend 10-20 percent more.
